I’m feeling a little relieved as the weather is finally starting to turn a little warmer and I’m able to do outdoor sessions without my winter coat. I’m a summer girl through and through yet I’m too sentimental to pick up and move somewhere tropical, even though it would be my hearts desire. I like snow and winter until about February 1 and then I’m over it. If you find someone that loves the cool Michigan weather they’re usually an outdoorsman….aka. hunters. Which brings me to Jon & Kat (not Kate …and there are no 8..Yet, anyway.). Jon, an avid outdoorsman, has managed to captivate the heart of this beautiful woman who has delightedly taken interest in the things he loves. She hunts and fishes and he’s so proud of her when he talks about it. They’re so sweet together, they’re simple, uncomplicated, joyful and just plain old pleasant company. Enjoy the sneak peak of my fav’s from this fun session.
I’ve been excited about Nick & Beth’s engagement session since I met with them the first time. I got chills the minute Nick mentioned his yellow tandem bike. Although I don’t necessarily like “props” in my photos a bicycle made two is sort of special and a most worthy “prop” if we must have one. When I asked Beth to hop in front and drive away she failed to mention that she’s not normally the driver of this bad boy which resulted in lots of swerving, squeals, and a near miss on the curb before Nick took over the driving. I secretly wanted to give the bike a try but after I saw Beth drive it I refrained from asking….. Me crashing a bike wouldn’t be pretty.
I love the opportunity to work with each of my couples before their wedding. It’s at the tip-top of my list of important thing’s list. I like to hear their stories, see how they interact with each other and especially with me and my camera. Beth and Nick were no exception. I loved spending the time with them, seeing them laugh, how naturally they fall together for pictures and I love the images we got. I absolutely can’t wait until their big day. 🙂

I’ve been to this Island several times since I was in high school. This was the 8th year in a row that Steve and I were able to bring our family. I absolutely love it there and as soon as I arrive I usually announce that I’m never going home. I enjoy the sunrise and the sunset every day, walking on the beach, lounging, reading, eating, collecting shells, watching my kids feed the birds. We are tourists only in the sense that we are away from home, but we literally just live at the beach. We truly consider it our home away from home as the same families usually roll in about the same time and we spend our week together catching up on what’s happened since last year. Cooking (we only ate out once!) & laundry are the main chores and our only concern from day to day is whether or not we have on enough sunscreen. We almost didn’t go this year….the typical excuse…”we should stay home, save the money…”. But things changed, we felt the urge to go at the last minute and our usual spot just happened to still be available. It was meant to be. I only have a few dozen images which is always shocking to people but I have to remind them that although I love taking pictures it is vacation and pulling out my camera isn’t usually at the top of my to-do list everyday. But it is something that I have to be consciously aware of because I know that my kids treasure the memories so here are a few of my fav’s from this year. It was a shorter trip than we normally take but we are thankful all the same. The weather was gorgeous, beautiful sunrises and sunset, gentle gulf breezes, watching the dolphins in the gulf, and seeing the sky lit up with stars at night. While I was there I was reminded of a quote I read years ago “My father took us on vacations he couldn’t afford to make memories we couldn’t afford to live without”. Our trip wasn’t anything fancy, there was no trip to Disney or an amusement park, I lived in a single pair of flip-flops for the entire trip, riding in a mini-van with 4 kids to Florida & back is not even close to glamourous……But for me it’s enough. I’m just so thankful to be able to unplug from “life” and savor the time with my incredible husband and our growing family. I’m so blessed.

I know several people that are in the battles of their lives fighting this dreadful disease and although I can make a meal for them, or just offer support I never feel like I’m doing enough to help fight this war. The first time I attended Relay for Life in Rockford 4 years ago I was impressed by the outpouring of support in our community. I didn’t realize how many people could fit on the track at North Rockford Middle school. It’s an amazing experience, a great cause, I love being a part of it and I’m excited to parter with Sable Homes for this fundraiser. As many of you know I’m not a studio photographer due to the fact that I most enjoy working in a variety of settings (and I get tired of my backdrops very easily!). These model homes are beautifully decorated and offer several unique settings for these portrait sessions. Sessions are for everyone! Join us in our fundraising efforts and if you’ve been putting off updating your photos, wait no longer! You will love this.

I go waaaaayy back with this family. I have a history with them. I knew them before they were a family, shooting an engagement session and then their wedding several years ago. A few years later I grieved for them when their first son was stillborn and was thrilled for them when they were expecting Brennan. I witnessed how tenderly they cared for him after he was born and how thankful they were for his little life. Last summer I went back to their home after Ruby was born. Life was different with a busy toddler and a newborn daughter. Although exhausted, it was obvious that they were loving every minute of it. Last week during our session I saw them learning to negotiate with a busy 2 year old (as long as you have a snack, it is possible!) and how they look at their precious daughter with adoration (she’s so smiley and cute I can’t stand it!!!). I witnessed them laughing, still loving each other and embracing family life. This is hands down the BEST part of my job! I work with a LOT of families, but I don’t always know the whole story. I won’t pretend to know all the details of their day to day life but I feel privileged to have been a part of some of their most precious memories. I love that they trust me with their children, that when we’re together we laugh and feel like we’re old friends. Like everyone, I have my fair share of days where I am uncertain about this path in life, questioning if it’s still working, still worth it, still right for me? When families return to me time and time again I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the connections I’ve made, the moments I’ve witnessed and for the opportunity to take photos of these sweet faces.
