WHY TO HIRE AN EXPERIENCED WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER | Terri Gillis Photography

I had a call from a bride early this morning who is less than satisfied with her wedding photos that were taken by a friend of hers.  She wants me to look and see if I can “fix” them.  She did hire and pay a friend who is just starting out.  She says her friend had a nice camera and was so excited for the opportunity so she didn’t even worry about it; figured it “couldn’t be messed up”.  The images are underexposed (too dark), many out of focus (possibly due to a cheap lens), she thinks the groups look awkward (poor posing), the color is weird (not correctly white balanced), she wants me to take the black circles out from under her eyes (poor lighting technique).  Don’t kid yourself into thinking that nice equipment and good intentions are all it takes.

The truth is that I’ve had this phone call on more than one occassion and it leaves me shaking my head.   There are MANY wonderful photographers out there, but there are also some others that really need to get a little more practice under their belt.  If your budget is that tight I guess it might be worth the gamble (maybe?).   I serously don’t know a single woman who hasn’t thought (fantasized, hoped, dreamed, wished, obsessed) a few times about her wedding day; I never understand why this is the corner they choose to cut.    This bride did have a decent budget and she had room in it to afford a photographer yet underestimated how she would feel if the photos didn’t turn out.

So how do you choose?

1.)Are you really willing to risk how you will remember this day? This is your one wedding day.  At the end of the day you’ll walk away with your man, your wedding rings and hopefully some fantastic reminders of the day.  Meet with an experienced pro.

2.)Ask your recently married friends who they hired and ask to look through ALL of their images, their album or anything their photographer provided them with.  Inquire about how long it took, what they got, how they felt and how the day went with the photographer?

3.)Does your photographer have or need a plan? I personally can work off of a list of photos but I prefer not to.  About 2 weeks before the wedding I offer them a detailed itenerary of who I will need when/where and give them an opportunity to review it and fine tune it if we have to.  There is no guessing on who will go next, I never (ever) ask…. “Now what should we do?”…

4.)When you meet with your photographer they should offer you a variety of their work to look at and touch. Not just an iPad, computer or wall display.    Prior to the meeting you should have looked through their website, blog, facebook and try to see if their photos have the look that your photos want.  Look carefully at the printed materials (albums, prints, etc.). The look should be consistant.  Colors should be consistant, posing consistant, images are focused. It’s a REALLY good thing if you look through their photos and feel like the photos all look similar, that means that they have a defined style and your photos will fall into this style.   If you look at their photos and like them but feel like you want a different look don’t expect that photographer to stray from their style, just look for th photographer who offers the look you’re going for.  If you asked me to change something about my style I would be baffled… How much would be too much, or not enough??

5.) Inquire about their experience.  How many weddings have they photographed? How do they feel about weddings? Experienced wedding photographers have done this MANY times and weddings don’t make us nervous. The drill is pretty much the same at every wedding with a different details, weather, location and one sweet couple at the first day of their life.  We have planned for your day as you have and will get the job done confidently and efficiently.

6.) What package do I need? What do I buy?  What do you want to do with your photos? Do you really want to pay for a full day of coverage for a photographer, details, portraits, ceremony, reception, if you only plan to have a handful of 5×7’s and 8×10’s printed for your house and your family?  If that’s all you inted to do with your photos, just purchase some coverage for family photos & skip all the rest.  If you truly want the whole day documented get an album to tell the story.  Albums are available in a variety of shapes and sizes and priced to accommodate all budgets.  I’ve never heard of a couple who regretted purchasing an  album.

If you’re looking for a wedding photographer I would love to meet with you and hear about the details of your day.

All of my collections include coverage, digital files, an online gallery and an engagement session to take place in the Greater Grand Rapids area.  Images will be ready for viewing within 3 weeks of your wedding.

I’ve officially been a photographer for 14 years, have  photographed over 250 weddings in West Michigan; I’ve traveled for clients weddings as far as Florida and Hawaii.  I also have a beautiful studio that is 3 years old and is located in downtown Rockford.

I have won awards, contests and magazine covers with my photography but  true success is defined through wedding couples returning to me again and again.  It’s a total blast to see them and continue to make memories with their families.

I describe my style as clean and vibrant.  I use Photoshop mostly for cleaning with a little creative tweak hear and there. Most of the images look pretty much just like this straight out of the camera.

I don’t believe in bridezilla…. I believe in passionate women; especially since I’m one of them.  I love weddings.

I’ve been married to my wonderful husband, Steve for 21 years.  I love being married and hope you will too!

Please enjoy this  collection of my work.  You can also look through my archives for even more.

Enjoy!!

Sweet & Simple Little Me | Michigan Children Photography| Terri Gillis 2014

Happy Monday!!  Happy New Year!!

We’re almost half way through January and I’ve had a wonderful long relaxing break.  Wow, did I ever need that!

There’s always a winter slow down.   I’ve got a few sessions here and there but most of my time is spent reorganizing, planning for the year and the dreaded preparation for taxes.  Working with the little faces is way more fun than that so I’m offering a winter special to get out of this cave!

Here’s the 411 –

Sweet & Simple – “Little Me” –  winter special – $150 (normally $250).

I’ve had visions of tu-tus, neck-ties and crazy colorful clothes all on a one day mini-session but my gut kept bringing me back to …. Sweet & simple.  Dress your little one however you like and let’s focus on their sweet little self.  1st child is $150 and additional children are $50 each.  Limit of 2 outfits per child.  Recommended ages 3mos and up.

I will also have some sweet new products to show you as a way to display your photos, or give them as a gift for gradparents (or for yourself).

XO – Terri

Karrie & Justin |Winter Engagement Session | Terri Gillis Photography

Winter engagement sessions in Michigan are tricky.  You can’t plan for anything more than 20 minutes in advance. It could be too cold, too breezy, too snowy, to sunny (blinding your subjects with the white snow)…. You could have ice, too much snow or heaven forbid… no snow. I can’t tell you how many I’ve had to schedule and reschedule due to one/all of the above.    I have people make requests…. “We want our session to be in the winter after a fresh snowfall”…. so the snow falls on Sunday night and then they’re not available on Monday and it’s melted come the next weekend.    Do you see where I’m going here it’s unpredictable… you just never know what’s going to happen with our crazy weather.  BTW, my kids were NOT happy this morning when there was no snow day (FIST PUMP for all the Mom’s out there saved from a snow day!).

Last weekend we had our family Christmas party and this is my beautiful cousin Karrie and her fiance Justin.  I seriously called them as they were driving in from Illinois and said…. “I’ll probably just try and take a few photos of you two today just, just for fun!”  (How do you like that, no warning whatsoever! )   When I left my house in Rockford it was sunshine, blue skies and zero snow.  But when we arrived out in Holland it was positively a  winter wonderland.  So as the afternoon went on I saw the snow lighten up a little and told them to fetch their coats and out we went…..and this is what we got, in about 15 minutes.  Glorious…. couldn’t have even dreamed or wished for it.  If I had hoped or planned for this it wouldn’t have been…. it was so perfect I could cry.  I don’ t think we spend more than 15 minutes outside (Brrrrr…..) but these sweet photos warm my heart.

I love the song the Simple things by Jim Brickman and I keep thinking of that as I look through these images….

Hey, time won’t wait, life goes by
Every day’s a brand new sky
Every tear comes to dry
All that really matters in this crazy world
Is you and I together baby, just remember

The first leaves off the tree, the way you look at me
A thousand chiming church bells ring, the simple things are free
The sun, the moon, the stars, the beating of two hearts
How I love the simple things, the simple things just are….

Karrie & Justin –  Congratulations on your engagement – SO incredibly happy for you both!

XO!!!

Newborn Photography| Michigan Newborn Photographer Terri Gillis

I had an expectant Mom call me the other day for information about newborn photography.  She says “Tell me why I should do a newborn session when our baby is born?” .  A million reasons run through my mind, most of them selfish because lets face it I’m running a business here. I just paused and said “Here is why….. Because your baby will only be this little ONCE.  It doesn’t last long.  The sleepy face, the fuzzy velvety skin, being able to fold them up into crazy little poses and they don’t seem to mind.  As with many other moments in your life, this is a vapor that will be gone sooner than you know.  You won’t regret doing the session but you might regret not doing it.”

I take a limited amount of newborns every month and am implementing a new program for all of my newborns with session/disk deals that you won’t be able to resist.  Newborns MUST be younger than 14 days (6-10 days is my fav).  Call me for the 411! 616.550.8997.

What to wear for family photos | Terri Gillis Photography

My clients tell me again and again that the hardest and most stressful part of planning for their family photo session is what they’re going to be wearing.

When they ask for advice my first response is always…”Stay away from uniforms.  Outfits should coordinate not match.” I can not emphasize this enough. In 1970 it was extremely popular to have everyone in the family wear matching outfits usually a crew neck cardigan with a turtleneck and matching Lee jeans.

Over and over I have people say…. Well, we might just do white shirts and jeans and I stop them right there…. don’t do it (DON’T.DO.IT).  I know that this seems easy but I promise that you will not be satisfied with your images later. There are too many colors in this world to wear white…. Unless your a bride.  If you’re a bride, it’s definitely safe to wear white!  😉

This family did a great job.  She purchased her girls outfits and her own shirt from Matilda Jane.  I love their line of clothing and all the colors and patterns.  If you’re not into online ordering or trunk shows but headed to the mall I would say start at   The Gap.… They make it easy for you.  Typically if you purchase everything on the same day the entire collection will coordinate.  This includes if you’re hitting up The Gap outlet.  If you’ll notice in the outfits I have featured below, she took the patterned outfits and pulled from those colors when selecting what the boys will wear.  So even if you’re not shopping Matilda Jane or the Gap, simply take your most patterned outfit that you have selected (usually for your youngest person in the photo) and pull from there for your colors for everyone else.  Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, stripes or polkadots but add in your solids also somewhere…. put solids on the boys or one of them, in a scarf or a sold cardigan over a patterned dress.  It’s really that easy and will make for some pretty photos.
