Pat + Liz {Hawaii Wedding Photography}

ALOOOOHHHHAAAAA!!! I had the privilege of traveling to Oahu to shoot Pat & Liz’s beautiful Hawaii destination wedding.  Talk about a dream come true. I look back over the years I’ve been in business and feel like all the days before might have been leading up to this one. I think back to Saturdays when I was taking college classes, developing film in the lab’s dark room, working hard  to become educated & to turn my passion into a career. I never dreamed that someday it would take me 5,000 miles away, to Hawaii, where I’ve dreamed of going since I saw that Brady Bunch episode where they went to Hawaii (I’m completely serious!). 13 years ago I swore I would never shoot weddings but 100’s of weddings later I found myself on an island in the Pacific where the sun shines 385 days a year….it was an AMAZING experience and I’m so thankful to Pat and Liz for trusting me with this special memory. Maholo!

Hotel – Moana Surfrider – Ceremony/Reception – Outrigger Canoe Club

Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high,

And the dreams that you dreamed of,
Once in a lullaby.

Oh, somewhere over the rainbow,
blue birds fly, And the dreams that you dreamed of,
Dreams really do come true.

Someday, I’ll wish upon a star,
Wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where trouble melts like lemon drops,
High above the chimney top,
That’s where you’ll find me.

Katie & Ethan – Engaged! {Grand Rapids Engagement Photography}

Katie & Ethan came to Rockford last week for their engagement session and all I can say is WOW. These two were SO sweet to work with…. playful, romantic, at ease & up for anything I suggested.  It was sort of a chilly morning but they put on brave faces and pressed on through the session without complaint and were just amazing to work with.  They shared their story of how they discovered each other, got engaged and how amazing their families have been with the planning process. They are so joyful and recognize that planning a wedding is going to be a lot of work & as much as they’re looking forward to the wedding & celebration both confess that they just can’t wait to be married…..and I almost leap for joy when I hear couples talk like that because THAT is what it’s all about!   I can’t wait for your big day and trust me….you are going to LOVE being married! It’s the best.

Remembering 9/11/01…

As I woke up this morning, I looked around…What time is it?  What day is it?….It’s September 11th. I am overtaken in an instant by the sobering memory of this day 10 year ago.  I get up, wake up my kids and my husband…I’m going to the Healing fields. Right now. Who’s coming?  Steve gets up, two kids also get up.  It’s not surprising to me which two.  One that remembers being in 2nd grade and hearing about it at school and my youngest, who doesn’t remember but has heard me tell the story of where I was time and again.  Like many, it was a typical morning, getting kids off to school and preschool, shower, diaper  changes, getting kids dressed, combing hair on my little boys and  a fussy 5month old baby who is ready (begging) to go down for her morning nap….so as I sit down, a welcome break, I grab the remote & flip on the Today show and it all unfolds right there.  My first thoughts “Who could be stupid enough to fly a plane into the World Trade Center”?…Another plane hit……Watching the people faces and then the Towers collapse… I don’t remember much beyond it…I don’t know if I actually laid her in her crib at some point, or what the boys were doing.  I just remember being afraid to step away from the TV, not knowing what would happen next…I’m sure I talked to someone on the phone, I vaguely recall talking to Steve.  I just remember feeling gripped, terrified, I cried, I prayed, I held my kids all day, I could not wait to get Spencer home from school, I skipped my trip to the grocery store.

I can hardly believe it’s been 10yrs. and that my baby is now 10yrs. old. This morning at the Healing Fields she walked all the way to the top of the Face with her Dad while I just walked around through the flags.  When I saw them coming back down she got to a point where she saw me and my waive put her into a straight sprint towards me which happens often. But for a brief instant I thought  “Stop! Don’t run, be more reverent for where we are!”  but I didn’t stop her, I picked up my camera and started snapping. Because she’s 10.  Because she lives in America she does not live in fear. She doesn’t understand terrorism or war and she only knows what it’s like to be free. She is kind and courteous and respectful and is interested in the flags and the names and the stories, she will remember the victims through the news, stories and our recollections.  I don’t believe any of the victims of 9/11 would want those terrorists to steal another moment of joy from anyone, especially a 10yr old child.

My oldest son, now in his senior year of high school about to embark on the world and has arrived at the  the reality that freedom is not free. His eyes have been opened to world events…His generation is going to have a lot on their plate.   He is quiet, he take it all in, he is reflective….He remembers.

I’m proud to be an American,

where at least I know I’m free.

And I wont forget the men who died,

who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,

next to you and defend her still today.

‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,

God bless the USA.

Jordon & Iliana {West Michigan Wedding Photography}

WOW…. I could leave that one word for the entire blog post and anyone who attended can affirm that comment, am I right?

Gorgeous Day, gorgeous couple, no detail overlooked, family an friends from around the world came and celebrated with this couple ,at the home of the groom’s parents, who very sweetly and generously hosted this lovely celebration.  I have attended many beautiful weddings and I am always amazed at how all of the little details come together.  At every turn of this wedding there was something beautiful to look at…the flowers were spectacular, a gorgeous ceremony and then to the groom’s parents home where a beautiful reception awaited us. It started on the patio, sweet glowing little lights strung above and even the glasses of champagne were sparkling and there certainly wasn’t a shortage of smiling faces.  After a bit we were escorted down to a clear tent that looked like something out of a movie set, it was that amazing.  As I was leaving late in the evening I couldn’t resist capturing an image of the party below that I knew would carry on late into the evening….and down at that part was a  beautiful couple at the very beginning of their happily ever after.  Congratulations Jordon & Iliana!!!

Thomas & Shirley {West Michigan Weddings}

Thomas and Shirley tied the know 2 weeks ago at Pillar Church in Holland on a beautiful summer day.  I have really enjoyed working with these two since I met them last year and did their engagement session last fall.  Born and raise on farms, Thomas has been sweet on Shirley since he met her at a 4H fair several years ago.  These two are good old fashioned sweet and simple.  Shirley is not big on frills but she looked beautiful in her wedding gown and I an not even kidding when I tell you that I witnessed Thomas catch his breath at his first glimpse of her.  Their day was a wonderful celebration filled with family & friends who came from near and far to wish this couple well. Before the day was over I felt honored to be privy to the surprise that they would make their grand exit via a hot air balloon.  Their family and friends were so surprised and watching them float away in that balloon was nothing short of a fairy tale ending to a wedding day.  Congratulations Thomas and Shirley!  Thanks so much for including me in your special day!!
